Dive with Great White Sharks

Just 5 nautical miles off of our coastline are Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, a bird sanctuary and seal colony respectively. Between these islands is a channel called "Shark Alley". This area is considered the international Mecca for diving with Great White Sharks and has hosted many dive and photography groups (including National Geographic, Discovery.

Channel and ABC TV crews). View these magnificent creatures from a boat or have the ultimate thrill of being in a shark cage! It is not necessary to have a diving certificate; top acclaimed diver masters will train you on board. Lunch and cool drinks are provided.

Watch Southern Right Whales

Mid - July until the end of December, our beautiful coastline is studded with our most precious creatures. The Southern Right whales migrate to Walker Bay during this season to breed. They are truly spectacular, and remarkably playful for their size. They are inquisitive creatures, and come very close to the shore. For an unforgettable experience, you can view these majestic animals from our magnificent De Kelders cliffs or get really get up really close and personal on a boat viewing experience.

Set in the cliffs of our beautiful coastline, are the most incredible sea caves, and hiking trails. The cavernous main cave has an archeological dig site, which provided evidence of man existing in this region 80 000 years ago. It is an easy hike, but PLEASE wear closed shoes, preferably trainers. Remember to take your camera for the most amazing photos!

Explore Platbos Indigenous Forest

Just off the coast of Gansbaai you will find Africa's southernmost forest. Platbos is an ancient, indigenous forest that lies on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills on the Grootbos Road just outside Stanford, the largest remaining fragment of the orginal Swartkransberg Forests - lowland forests of the fynbos biome. a forest made up predominantly of wild olive, white pear and white stinkwood trees.

Drive to Cape L'Agulhas

Just over an hour's drive from Saxon Lodge – lies the southern-most tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. Fantastic views from the lighthouse, which houses an excellent museum depicting lighthouses from all over the world.

Visit Arniston Fishing Villiage

Not far and on the road from Cape L'Agulhas The whole village is a national monument! If you do not have your own transport, we can arrange this trip with a registered Tour Guide.

Experience Aquila Game Reserve

Aquila Game Reserve lies between Worster and Touws River – it is a prestigious 4-star, malaria-free safari destination and stands in an area of 4,500 hectares of Klein Karoo. Guests can see fabulous wildlife in this reserve which is also home to Big Five game (Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard). Aquila Game Reserve has 3 biomes - Fynbos, Renosterveldt and succulent Karoo and has several hectares of mountain Proteas. From July through September the reserve showcases a wonderful display of colourful Karoo flowers. They also have a Cheetah sanctuary.

There is a pre-dawn departure from Saxon Lodge at 5am.... You arrive at Aquila Game Reserve for breakfast. After breakfast there is a 3 hour game drive, followed by an excellent buffet lunch. After lunch visit the cheetahs and have a picture taken with them. Return to Saxon Lodge, early evening. Cost may appear a bit expensive, but well worth it to see the Big 5, in a malaria free area.

Visit De Hoop Nature Reserve…

Just over an hour's drive away, lies the De HOOP NATURE RESERVE, and the BREEDE RIVER. The river is one of the largest navigable rivers in South Africa, and can be crossed at Malgas on the only hand drawn pont remaining in the country.

Birkenhead brewery, is a wonderful micro brewery which offers tours of the brewery and estate. Enjoy beer tasting in their stunning pub, which also offers excellent meals.

Picnic at a Cheese Farm

Visit Klein River Cheese Farm close to Birkenhead about 7km outside of Stanford. Visitors to the farm can enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the banks of the tranquil Klein River or in the garden.
