Dyer Island Cruises operates daily eco-tours from the  Kleinbaai harbour, near Gansbaai, South Africa. Marine guides provide information on all trips. We are actively involved in conservation projects in the area.

This is the only organisation that has a boat permit to take visitors to the Dyer Island and Geyer Rock areas to see Southern Right Whales. Sightings include other whales species, seals and penguins. You often get good sighting of Great White Sharks too!

Dyer Island is located 8 km from the harbour and is home to several seabirds, including African penguins. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock with its large Cape fur seal colony. The channel between the islands is affectionately known as Shark Alley and is world famous for its Great White Sharks.

Every winter sees the arrival of southern right whales as they migrate from the Antarctic to South Africa to mate and calve.  Dyer Island Cruises is the sole permit holder for boat-based whale watching between Danger Point and Quoin Point.  We operate according to a strict code of conduct and put the welfare of the animals above everything else.

Dyer Island Cruises regularly consults with experts in the field of cetaceans, especially DR Peter Best who is South Africa's leading southern right whale researcher. We firmly believe that we provide the most informative whale watching cruise in South Africa.

Whale watching trips are 2½ to 3 hours long.

DYER ISLAND

This fascinating island attracts thousands of visitors every year to see:

The island is situated some 8 km from Kleinbaai and is home to 6000 – 8000 African penguins, about 120 000 Cape Cormorants, as well as most of the other seabirds on our coast. It has been inhabited since the early 1800's and became a nature reserve in 1982. In the past seals were culled for skins and oil, and guano was removed from the island and used as fertilizer. Dyer Island is a must for all bird enthusiasts. The birds which can be seen include roseatte terns, swift terns, African black oystercatchers, southern giant petrels, subantartic skuas, Wilson's storm petrel and Leach's storm petrel.

GEYSER ROCK

Next to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock with its colony of 60 000 Cape fur seals.These intelligent, curious and playful animals can be seen at close range and are a highlight for many a tourist. Watch them follow the boat and surf the waves. The females give birth in December, when about 10 000 pups can be seen amongst the large bull seals competing for cows and the best territory.
